Canada and Mexico hit back at Trump’s tariffs as China vows ‘corresponding countermeasures’
At first blush this certainly sounds warranted. What was Trump thinking in hitting his major trading partners with tariffs? What did he expect? Did he expect them to roll over and smile?
Well, far from it. Trudeau, the still acting Primeminister of Canada and Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico’s current president as well as China have vowed to retailiate and impose tariffs of their own on the U.S. of A. The question that begs serious answer is : well what does this do to and for the people?
Let us take this one step at a time. While Trump will impose tariffs on foreign products, making them effectively more expensive than made in USA, he is also looking to drop income tax and replace with what he calls an external revenue service.
You need to think about this revolutionary thinking a bit. While he has no intentions of making any less money for government coffers, he is easing the increased pricing on foreing made products when compared to made in USA by dropping the income tax. Means that only people who insist on wanting to purchase foreign made products will have to pay extra – the ones that can afford to will be putting money into government coffers through tariffs rather than income taxes.
What about Trudeau? what plan does he have? It seems he wants to tariff Canadians out of existence. Rather than facing the music he himself stated that he’s not the right choice to lead party in next election, promises to resign as PM He comes up with a blustering proposal that will see prices in Canada skyrocket yet again. Why is it so hard to see what needs to be done to “retaliate” if you want to use that word.
I would like to think that twice in history the Americans tried to take Canada and both times they failed only to see Canada become their the best of friends and the two nations produce probably the most intertwined economies. The resource rich North and the industrial Middle combined with cheap labour from Mexico. Everybody had a stake in this North American Free Trade.!
The Canadian correct approach should be to immediately drop all interprovincial trade barriers, Make sure to apply varying tariffs so that Canadian products are at par or better priced and offer industry funding to establish what is missing – also with the help of strategic tariffs.
Now how come the Canadian PM is not talking about truly Canadian measures to improve Canadian productivity and the Canadian standard of living?
It is difficult to ascertain why the Canadian Prime minister might be ignoring the road now open to stimulate Canadian productivity with an intelligent made in Canada plan.
Oh and oil and gas?…I wonder if certain pipelines and switching stations have been operating for so long as to need some “serious” maintenance.
just some musings…I hope all of it works out in a wash. Canadians have suffered far too much and too long at the hands of politicians in the last decade.
It is time for someone to step up to the plate who has the intelligence and Canadian ingenuity to make Canada great again.
